June 2010 News Update

Dedication . . .

Kay Lipscomb and Dan Lipscomb (OSCAR family), along with Helen Lipscomb (ROB family) attended a Dedication Service at Berry College on May 21 honoring John R. Lipscomb, retired Vice President for Advancement. President Steve Briggs hosted the event, dedicating the Advancement Office Suite in John’s honor for 35 years of dedicated service. The event was well attended by friends, alumni, and former co-workers.

 Congratulations . . .

Ginger Morris, daughter of Ron and Sue Cox (KIT family), and Tim Busek were married on April 8, 2010, in a beautiful beach wedding in Jamaica. Tim grew up in Marietta, and he works in Alpharetta as a golf course superintendent. They reside in Cartersville. Welcome to the family, Tim!

Elizabeth Ramey, daughter of Eric Ramey and granddaughter of Tommy Ramey, is engaged and will be married in September. The family wishes you the very best, Elizabeth. Let us know the details for the next newsletter! (ETHEL family)

Lauren Elizabeth Middleton, daughter of Allan and Jan (Lipscomb) Middleton and granddaughter of Helen Lipscomb, (ROB family) will be married in Savannah on October 10.  (10-10-10)

Maranda and Brent Curl (Maranda is the daughter of Randy and Malinda Pennington of the OSCAR Family), are expecting their third child in January. The new addition will join siblings Abigail Grace and Elijah Brent pictured below.

 Big Birthdays . . .

Margie (Lipscomb) Goss (KIT family) turned 90 years old on April 30. Margie is the oldest surviving direct descendant of Nathan and Laura Lipscomb.

The second oldest surviving direct descendant is John R. Lipscomb (OSCAR family) who turned 88 years old on April 26. In celebration of John’s birthday, daughter Trish Lipscomb
threw a two-part party for him. The first part was at the Waffle House near John’s home and the second at the assisted-living facility where he lives. Trish “blew” Happy Birthday on a keyboard that is “lung powered.” (We’ll have to ask her what that is!) The guests sang “Happy Birthday” and he quipped that he “had survived his birthday party.” Only two breaths to blow out the candles! Trish presented John with a booklet of birthday wishes from friends and family. Those in attendance were, Trish Lipscomb, Dan Lipscomb, David and Stacey Lipscomb, Kay Lipscomb, Bobby and Terri Studdard, and Tom Thompson and Beth Howell. Trish made sure it was festive and everyone had some laughs and generally enjoyed the event!

Illness (and Recovery) . . .

Harry Lipscomb has recently returned home after a stint in the hospital with pneumonia. Son Steve and wife Robin were able to visit with him before meeting up with family to continue their vacation. (LINT family)

Jimmye Lipscomb, wife of Walt Lipscomb (LINT family) will be having surgery soon. We hope she is able to be out and about in time for the reunion.

Joyce Worley, wife of Ted Worley (KIT family) is recovering nicely from a fall in March in which she broke her hip. As of June, she was already walking without her cane.

Ronald Cox (KIT family) spent some time earlier in June in the hospital being treated for congestive heart failure. He was released on June 8 and is recovering at home. We hope he continues to improve and will be at the reunion as usual!

Lucy Ferguson (KIT family) continues to battle some health issues and was in the hospital in late May with migraines and low hemoglobin, caused by internal bleeding. She says she is now on the road to recovery.

Allene (Leenie) Carbonie (ETHEL family) is in the hospital in Alabama (as of the time this article is being written) and has been there for about 3 weeks. She has an infection which they are trying to get under control without having to do surgery. Leenie has had a lot of health problems the last few years and she and Laura have been unable to attend the reunion the last couple of years. Everyone always asks about them at the reunions and Laura says they really hope Leenie is recovered enough to make the trip to Georgia in July. We hope so, too, Leenie and Laura!

Also from the ETHEL family, Joyce (Ramey) McLarty has been in the hospital three times since early May. She still suffers from constant pain and several doctors have been unable to find a cause. Daughter Kathy Hardee recently retired and says now she will have more time to help her mother with her many and varied health issues.

Travels . . .

Lucy Ferguson, daughter of Carolyn Wischer, granddaughter of the late Garnett and Rebecca Lipscomb (KIT family) will be traveling from Texas to Michigan for nephew Ryan Beaber’s high school graduation in June. Lucy’s daughters, Mandy and Shelby, will join her a few days later. Lucy says they are all looking forward to visiting with Mom/grandma Carolyn and Lucy’s sisters, Cindy Jobin and Heidi Beaber in Michigan.

Cynthia and Ed Nunn are returning to Costa Rica for vacation in June. Son Brady Wilson and his family will be joining them this year (ROB family). Have a safe trip and be sure to get home in time for the reunion, Cynthia!

Doug and Nancy Cox (KIT family) visited cousin Jan (Goss) and David Sherrouse in Tyler, Texas in March. The plan was to visit the lovely city of Tyler during the Annual Azalea Trail, but the azaleas were about two weeks late this year because of a cooler-than-usual winter and spring in East Texas. It was a good visit, though, in spite of the lack of flowers.

Jan and David Sherrouse (KIT family) were able to take their anniversary cruise to Alaska during the latter part of May. It was a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary (January 15) and they included a land tour and a cruise on the trip. The temperatures in Alaska were great and the weather was perfect for seeing all the sites.

Buford and Ann Lipscomb (JIM family) will celebrate their 40th anniversary on June 20. After going to India on a missions trip the week of June 14 where they will minister to about 100 pastors and their families, they will travel to Rome and after 5 days there, will enjoy a 7-day Mediterranean cruise. (You can follow the India conference on Buford’s Facebook page.)

Malinda, Randy, and Marissa Pennington (OSCAR family) enjoyed a 7-day cruise to Bermuda in May. Malinda says it was a wonderful trip—good weather, smooth sea, and gorgeous scenery. They returned a lot fatter and a little bit tanner (Malinda’s words)!
